The conflict between people and termites is that we build our homes in their habitat and out of their favorite food source.

Termites are actually useful to the environment. For instance, their feeding habits break down plants and dead or decaying trees into new, healthy soil.

Termite Control - Phoenix, AZ - Croach Pest Control ServicesBut termite control is important to maintaining the structural integrity of your home.

The US Department of Agriculture estimates there is $5 billion in termite damage a year in the United States alone.

Termites are active 24/7 and pretty much all year round, so they have a lot of time to do a substantial amount of damage.

The University of Arizona College of Agriculture recommends an inspection by a professional pest management company twice per year – in the Spring, and at the end of monsoon season when termites are most active.

Why Do Termites Invade My Home?

Termites enter your home in search of shelter, food, and water – just like any other pest. They are attracted to wood, paper, and boxes, all of which are food sources. If you have a leak in your roof, faucets or pipes, those are also a welcome mat to termites.

There are currently 18 known species in Arizona, but only two are considered pests that need your attention.

Drywood termites live inside of walls, furniture, doors, windowsills, or other wood structures on which they feed. Signs of a Drywood termite infestation may include piles of dry fecal pellets or wood that sounds hollow when you tap it every few inches.

Subterranean termites are your biggest problem and are considered the number one pest control concern in the state.

Subterranean termites live in the soil, tunnel through the ground, and climb the concrete or other structures to feed on the wood frame of your house. Signs of an infestation may include mud tubes, usually pale yellow to tan in color.

Other indicators of termite activity:

  • Spongy or blistered floors.
  • Outdoor termite mounds.
  • Swarms or signs of a recent swarm. Check your windowsills for droppings and discarded wings.

Recent studies in the Phoenix area estimate 15 to 20 termite colonies per acre with a colony containing between 60,000 to 1 million termites.

Termites are so prevalent in Arizona that it is essential you have a pest control plan in place.

HOW DO I PREVENT FUTURE TERMITE INFESTATIONS?

Now that you have a termite control plan in place, there are things you can do to help prevent a future infestation.

  • Keep mulch, wood debris, and firewood away from your home.
  • Trim shrubs and bushes away from the foundation.
  • Remove infested trees and stumps.
  • Fix leaky roofs, gutters, faucets and water lines.
  • Grade soil so that the water runs away from your foundation.
  • Reduce humidity by ventilating crawl spaces and attics.
  • Remove all wood-to-soil contact.
